Karen's Final Report

October 2021

It has been quite some time since we informed our Lady Members what has been happening at Ashgrove Golf Club. March actually. So here is what has transpired since then in regard to our golf.

The course was closed on Tuesday 16/3/21 due to course condition from all the rain.

St Patricks day Medley held on Saturday 20/03/21 was not the best outcome for the ladies as Annie Smith was the only Lady to play in the Medley competition. Well done Annie.

Covid cancelled the Ladies comp on Tuesday 30/03/21

Rain cancelled the Ladies comp on Tuesday 6/04/21

Ashgrove Ladies Club Championships

Our Club Championships commenced on Saturday 15th May and after four rounds, was completed on Saturday 29th May (except for the Men's A grade which was decided the following Saturday). There were twenty four women competing for the Championship with only one not able to compete in all four rounds due to illness. It was difficult going, which was evident with the PCC for Rounds 1 & 4 at +1 and Round 2 at +2. Though the Pin placements were challenging they were fair. With so many in the field on the first day the pace of play was noticeably slow with two of the women playing later in the field finishing in the dark.

The results for our Ladies Championships divisions are:

Div 1

Winner and Club Champion: Suzanne Jordan (387 Gross) - Suzanne is our Defending Champion

Runner Up: Jenny Lang (394 Gross)

Best Nett: Debbie Lemmon (298 Nett)

Div 2

Winner: Sue Moller (407 Gross)

Runner Up: Cathy Moore (408 Gross)

Best Nett: Rochele Gibson (304 Nett)

Congratulations to all who competed in the Club Championships.

Thank you to our Club captains and vice-captains for all the work they put in before, during and after this Honour Board event. Thank you also to James Melville and his team for presenting the course in such great condition especially after all the foot traffic and carts over the four rounds.

The BDLGA Champion of Champions will be held at Virginia GC on Monday 26th July 2021, unfortunately Suzanne Jordan was unable to attend.

The Ladies Ashgrove Cup

The Ashgrove Cup, which is played over two Tuesdays and awarded on Best Nett, was completed on Tuesday the 22nd of June after lightning stopped play last week and a decision was made to reschedule. After completion of Round 1 we had 20 players vying for the honour, but at the start of Round 2 two of the players had to pull out. Congratulations to all those who participated and to our Winner: Cathy Moore (141 Nett), Runner up: Jenny Lang (144 Nett) and Best Gross: Suzanne Jordan (188 Gross).

Covid changed things again at 6pm Tuesday 29 June 2021as we went into a three day lockdown.

On Tuesday 27 July 2021 we played a team of four Scramble, sponsored by Helen Holland (winners)& Kerry Price (runners up). It was such a fun day with positive feedback from all the ladies especially the newer lady members who agreed it was a great way to be introduced to 18 holes of golf. The exuberance and sheer pleasure shown by Joanne Collins and Samantha Conry when with their other team members Jenny Lang and Karen Bretherton were announced as Runners Up was a moment enjoyed by all especially when a photo was requested to send to the husband. Congratulations goes to the winners: Louise Tregenza, Sue Moller, Helen Holland, and Kerry Price. Thank you to Helen for donating her prize back for a draw giving the remaining lady members a chance to win a prize.

The Ladies Ashgrove Jug

The Ashgrove Jug Qualifier was played on Tuesday 13th July with these eight teams qualifying.

1 Margaret Marshall & Gayle Kemp

2 Helen Holland & Ann Hardie

3 Sue Moller & Kim Lewin

4 Louise Tregenza & Kate Muir

5 Rosemary Phillips & Berenice Drew

6 Helen Carfrae & Chris Low

7 Trish Moore & Suzanne Jordan

8 Clare Pole & Gail Cartwright

After all the quarter and semi-finals being played the final two teams playing for the Ashgrove Jug were: Margaret Marshall & Gayle Kemp V Helen Holland & Ann Hardie. This was to be played on Tuesday the 10th of August but due to the Ashgrove Golf Club closing at 3:30 pm on Saturday 31st July when Brisbane went into lockdown, we rescheduled the final to be played at the end of the field on the 31st of August. Congratulations to our winners: Margaret Marshall & Gayle Kemp and runners up: Helen Holland & Ann Hardie

Because the course was closed at 3:30pm on Saturday the 31st of July until 4:00 pm Sunday the 07th of August, some of the ladies unfortunately did not complete their rounds. The competition was changed to a single stableford event, because of the number unable to finish their rounds in both competitions the results were not uploaded to Golflink.

Again, Rain cancelled the Ladies comp on Tuesday 24th August, always seems to rain on Tuesdays.

A decision was made to reschedule Rosemary Phillip's sponsored day to the 31st of August, which meant the cancelation of the Monthly Medal for that month as there just was no time left to hold it.

I unfortunately had to pull out as I broke my arm on the 26th of August 2021.

The Saturday Medal of Medals was held on 4/09/2021 and the Tuesday Medal of Medals on 07/09/2021. The Winner of the Ladies Medal of Medals for Saturday is Anne Daunt (24) Nett 65.

Anne has now won the Saturday medal of medals for the third consecutive year.

Tuesday's winner is Louise Tregenza (23) Nett 69.

Louise was very excited when she won her first monthly medal at Ashgrove Golf Club in July.

Congratulations to our winners and all the medal winners during the year.

Congratulations to Helen Holland, who on the 4th of September 2021 had an Eagle on the First....

Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty of Covid we decided to cancel our open day for this year which was a shame as we had received quite a few responses from other clubs to attend.

The Ashgrove Ladies Foursomes

The Ladies Foursomes were held on Tuesday 21/09/2021 (36 Hole event) in groups of six with 16 teams competing in the morning field (Sponsored by Joanne Collins & Samantha Conry) and 13 teams continuing on in round 2 vying for the honour of winning the Foursomes. The final results are Winners: Pam Baisden & Barbara Miller OCB

Runners Up: Mary Livingston & Di Marchbank

Best Gross: Suzanne Jordan & Sue Moller.

September the 28th saw the annual rivalry competition between the Ladies President and Captain's team. The outcome may have been a little different if they had participated, but with both being out with injuries they could contribute to the final score for their teams,

The final results for the day depicted a close outcome with both the President's & Captain's winner having the same score.

President's winner: Trish Moore 42Pts

Captain's winner: Maryanne Gurieff 42Pts

The winning team: Captains Team by 5 Pts

The Ladies Closing Days are Tuesday 30th of November and Saturday the 4th of December. Remember to get your Christmas outfits ready. Tuesday is Best 2 of 4BBB Stableford so get your team organized. I wonder which team of four will have the best outfits.

The Ashgrove Ladies Bronze Pennants

The Ashgrove Ladies Pennants commenced on Friday 14th May at Mt Warren Park where they took on Keperra. Unfortunately, the team went down 4 to 1, with two players going to the 17th, others to the 16th and 15th. Keperra just had the upper hand on the day.

Friday 21st May saw the Ashgrove team take on Oxley at Pacific. All the water ways were quite a daunting surprise but did not put any doubt in our minds we would do our best to take the games to the end. And this is what the Ladies did with Louise Tregenza going to the 18th and squaring, Jenny Lang winning on the 18th, both Chris Low and Susan Lane making it the 17th and Karen Bretherton to the 16th. Oxley won 3 ½ to 1 ½ but they had to work for it.

Friday, the 29th May we played Brisbane at Keperra Golf Club. It was a nice change not having to rise early for our commute to play pennants. As always, the weather this time of the year makes playing golf a pleasure. Our team again took it up to the competition with four players going to the 18th hole and one to the 16th with the result going in favour of Brisbane 3 ½ to 1 ½. This was a good result on the day with the six other clubs going down in their three matches 5 to 0. Well done to all our players and caddies. Friday, the 4th of June we had the honour of hosting the Bronze Z1 pennants teams here at Ashgrove. Ashgrove had a win over Indooroopilly 4 to 1. The Ashgrove team did exceptionally well with none of the team going to the 18th Hole. Jenny finished on 12, Susan on 13, Louise and Gayle on 16 and Karen's loss was on 15. Thank you to all our volunteers, those who supplied morning tea, our starter Helen Carfrae, the spotters and directional advisers Debbie Lemmon, Sue Ledlie and Clare Pole. Margaret Marshall for keeping everything moving along smoothly. Also, thank you to Zegatos for providing lunch to the many players and caddies from all the clubs, especially with all the different finishing times. The weather was kind, and the course was in great condition after the rain on the Thursday. Congratulations to James and his team, with many of the ladies from the other clubs commenting on how good our course was to play and even wanting to come back and play it again.

Friday the 11th of June the Ashgrove Bronze team travelled to Brisbane to play Mt Warren Park but unfortunately Mt Warren Park did not arrive on time and were disqualified resulting in a 5 to 0 win to Ashgrove. Friday the 18th of June the Pennant game was held at Indooroopilly. The team played their Red/Gold course which they found long and difficult. However, the team played well and only went down 3 to 2 to Pacific. Rosemary Phillips won on the 18th and Anne Daunt winning on the 16th. Susan Lane made it to the 17th with Jenny Lang and Louise Tregenza both finishing on the 15th.

Friday 25th June saw the final round of the Bronze Z1 pennant season where the Ashgrove team travelled to McLeod to take on McLeod. The team out did themselves by winning 3 ½ to 1 ½ with Louise Tregenza, Jenny Lang and Gayle Kemp winning on the 14th, Susan Lane squaring on the 18th. Unfortunately, Anne Daunt had a loss. Thank you to all the Players and Caddies for committing to 7 weeks (Fridays), for a small club we do a great job of having ten women out there for each game. I truly thank all for representing Ashgrove Golf Club in the Bronze 1 pennant competition.

Remember, if you are not able to play in a competition you have put your name down for, ring the pro shop to take your name off the sheet.

Finally, I would like to thank all the Lady Presidents and lady committee members I have had the honour and pleasure of working with over the years, for their help and support. Thank you to all AGC members for your support and encouragement and kind words. I have enjoyed being Lady Captain.

Welcome to the new Ladies Sub Committee:

President Susan Lane

Vice President Louise Tregenza

Captain Chris Low

Vice Captain Clare Pole

Secretary Joanne Collins
